Pattern and colour- A studio update

It has been a busy week thus far; family birthdays, children's concerts, the finishing up of an illustration, and this morning the joy of being a participant in someone else's workshop. In the excitement of everything, I have been playing around with the idea of color and design on a very simple level. I am working on a one of a kind paper installation which deviates widely from my normal work. It is experimental and makes me happy. Above all it is a mindless evaluation of how pattern works which will be valuable in future work.

In the first few tiles I imitated patterns I observed in the city center, tiles, cobble stones, and the marble tops of bistro tables; back at the studio I looked at a few books from my library which include a lot of detail and pattern. It is my idea to use the patterns I find all around me to create designs in vibrant colours. I will put them onto a black background eventually.

My only criteria is that my choice of colour cannot reflect the actual colours that exist in the reality of that item. I got a little tired of taping the pieces of paper down one by one so I took a huge handful of the paper squares and taped them all down at once on a large drawing board. This has been great as it allows me to work much more efficiently. I also used the same base colour for several squares in a section, varying the designs as I moved down the row.

No two of the squares will be the same although they should be relatively harmonic when put together since the colours and combinations of colours repeat themselves again and again.

Here are some of the miniature pieces to date. The board is still covered and I will continue working on them this evening while watching a movie.
