14 highlights of the Kunsthaus Graz- Textile exhibition

Last week my sister and I had the opportunity to run through the current exhibition of textile art at Kunsthaus Graz. We only spent a short time there since we had a limited time to see it and therefore didn't take the time to read the literature and information presented. However, the asthetics of the exhibition itself were very inspirational.

Here are a few of the highlights.

1. Mirror Mosaic- the words 'Resist Resisting God' are pieced into this work.

2.  This looks Tibetan to me, but I really dont know. I didn't see a description for it. The colors are nice anyway.

 3. There were a few really nice pieces of african art- and beading

4. The painting of a chicken basket- originals were nearby for comparison

5. Ceramic buttons in group- for some reason this is really pleasing

 6. Two large pieces were made if reeds. One in the original color and one dyed. I would love to have one of these for my diningroom...

here are a few close ups:

7. This portrait appeared to be made of little clumps of fimo in a paint by number style. I looked for a description of the method used but didn't find one. The effect is really nice though.

 8. These chandeliers made of thin plastic sheets would be a perfect upcycle idea, still mentally working on this...

 9. This character is woven on a on a metal frame. Also pretty cool.

 10. Here there are ceramic constraction helmets with traditional izmir tile painting to represent the Turkish Gastarbeiter (visiting workmen) who contributed so significantly to rebuilding central Europe (Especially in Germanic countries) in the 50s and 60s.

 11. An interesting combination of aluminum foil(?) and denim. It looks very beautiful and shines in the light. I love the contrast.

 12. Here is a similar technique used on a combination of fabrics.

 13. Braille like punches create intriguing patterns on the floor.

14. These carved stools have two layers of wood in which the top is cut to produce a relief pattern. The artist played with modern motives- here is the clocktower and Kunsthaus, two of the landmarks of the city.
