Botanical Illustration

In a calendar swirling with events, there are a few fixed appointments each year that receive priority. One of these is the Botanical Illustration Seminar that I participate in biannually, in both Spring and Autumn. This seminar takes place at the local museum and is a comfortable distance from my house. I really enjoy the two days set aside just for painting without interruption. Yesterday it was announced that this weekend is the last seminar to take place in the Museum. Whether or not it will be held in another location next year, or canceled remains to be seen. Either way- this weekend was the end of an era.

I hope that the new year will bring a new location and not a true end to Botanical Illustration, as I also hope that a new location will provide a better room. The light in the old one being so poor that I always ended up with strained eyes at the end of the day.  But in the meantime, while I can only wait for further information I will share the illustration I did this weekend. Below are the steps I took in creating it, from sketch to finished work. I worked in a little looser style than usual since I wanted to have it finished by the end of the two days. And I feel I achieved the goal I had set for myself. I needed an additional plant for the exhibition at the end of November and now I have one.

And finally here is the final product.

Have you done Botanical Illustration? Do you participate in a recurring seminar? Let me know in the comments.
