Urban sketching on Valentine's day- February meetup

A glass of wine, flowers, my laptop, a blog post to write... Valentine's day with children is not what it is to people without. In our house we have have a nice family dinner and chocolates all around. And in the absence of 'romantic' plans zu zweit, my day centered around several enjoyable activities, one of which was our monthly urban sketching meet-up.

That first warm day when you can sit outside and sketch without a coat, what a pleasure. Today was such a day. Unsure of how many people would come Jana and I planned to go to the museum and sketch a few animals if we were alone, however several 'new sketchers' joined us. A couple of these are or were professional artists but the others are new enthusiasts. It is fun to witness their growing ability.

A few weeks ago I held an urban sketching workshop for the local International Women's Association. Fifteen of us spent the morning at a local cafe's biggest table sketching and chatting. I wasn't sure whether many people would like it but it turned out to be generally quite well recieved and the results were very impressive.

 Here are some of them:

As a result I sent the invitation for today's meet-up to the group thinking that maybe one or two people would want to join and was surprised that quite a few of them came. We had a really pleasant time sitting, first in the courtyard of our museum sketching some of the architectural details, and then later in a nearby cafe, working from the comfort of a table laden with coffees and panna cotta.

Always the talker, a habit which must be genetic, I was one of the last to leave, also genetic, and as we walked out the door we were given roses, the perfect addition to any urban sketcher's page dated, February 14th. Sitting at the bus stop waiting for my children to arrive I sketched it in, keeping it in the shade of my body as much as possible soas to prevent wilting and changing shape mid-sketch. It survived and so did the sketch which, as luck would have it was finished just as a large pompom could be spotted somewhere near the center of the mass exiting the bus.

What enjoyable activity did you do today, either alone, in a group, or together with someone special? Let me know in the comments.
