Day trip to Maribor, Slovenja

We have been on school break all week, thus all the fun urban sketching outings with and without children. Today we went on a day trip to Maribor, Slovenia. Only about 45 minutes away, Maribor is the perfect opportunity for a change of scenery. In the past, we have usually gone there on weekends or holidays meaning that although the cafes were open the shops usually weren't. Today, however, everything was open. I was a little surprised to see so many interesting shops. We didn't go into any of them except an art shop but I have memorized a few for future trips. We did, however, meet a friend for coffee in the sun.

Maribor is separated by the Drava, a wide river inhabited by swans and lined with charming cafes. (Ok, maybe lined is excessive, but there are a few).  There is a ferry which humorously goes back and forth between 3 bridges and benches on the banks of the river.

The old town is full of delightfully beautiful, crumbling old buildings. At one point part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, this Slavic city still bears traces of Austrian influence in its architecture. A good potential location for urban sketching, if ever I go without the family. In any case, I am feeling inspired to paint a few buildings in the near future. Below is a little tour of Maribor. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

And of course we brought a few things home; cakes from Illich and art supplies to try out.
