Botanical Drawing workshop

Flowers warm my heart. Looking out at the sea of flowers on the hearth of the oven I am glad I chose a botanical theme for this month's seminar. They are not only beautiful but infinitely diverse in their form, anatomy, and geometry. Even without the leaves a single bloom can produce so many interesting drawings. Choosing between close up examinations of the center of the blossom, a variety of side views; and even full flower portraits with leaves, an artist can be occupied for some time.

This was the second workshop of the year in my small gallery atelier. At the first one, Creating depth and shadow in Graphite, I was able to lay out a few of the basic methods used in creating three dimentional objects. This one was based on line drawing but definitely had the option of using many of the skills from the last workshop.

The first half of the workshop focused on the anatomy of plants and how to draw them correctly.

It was broken down into flowers, leaves and stems. The participants did a sheet of very nice sketches, before choosing a flower to render as a final project.

The final renderings were done on handmade paper tinted with aquarelle.

Once the backgrounds had dried, we got a little side tracked adding salt to create patterns, the botanical drawings were rendered. Here are a few of the results in varying degrees of completion. I think they turned out really well. And the participants were a delight to work with.

The inspiration for this workshop came from a project I did last summer. You can see it in it's entirety here.

I plan to offer one workshop per month on the Saturday following the first full week of each month. Next month it will be on the 4th of April, in order to accommodate Easter. We will be making botanical stamps. If you are interested let me know, or keep a look out for the event on Facebook. My workshops are always from 2-4 on a Saturday afternoon, and as a nod to the year 2020, they each cost 20 euros. Material is always included.
